What this guide helps you decide
Decide whether a B2B SaaS website needs an llms.txt file.
What belongs in the file?
Link to canonical product, pricing, documentation, security and important research pages with short factual descriptions. Exclude private material and avoid listing hundreds of weak URLs that already exist in a sitemap.
What does not belong in the promise?
Do not tell buyers that the file forces an AI provider to train on, retrieve or cite a website. Provider behavior and crawler controls differ. Present the file as an optional navigation aid, not a guaranteed optimization.
- No ranking guarantee
- No crawler override
- No private content
- No substitute for sitemaps
Which controls remain essential?
Maintain valid robots.txt rules, accurate XML sitemaps, canonical URLs and normal internal links. OpenAI and Perplexity publish their own crawler documentation, which should be reviewed directly when deciding access.
A practical llms.txt acceptance test
Treat the file as a maintained navigation aid, not a substitute for crawlable pages. List only canonical URLs that return a successful response without login, render the same factual claims a visitor sees and remain useful on their own. Then inspect server logs to learn whether relevant agents request the file or the linked pages. Keep normal XML sitemaps, internal links, robots rules and page metadata intact because an llms.txt file does not replace any of them. Remove stale URLs when products, pricing or documentation move. The useful outcome is a smaller, accurate map of Eli's public evidence that a machine can follow, while the website remains fully understandable if the file is ignored.
Questions buyers ask next
Is llms.txt an official web standard?
It is a voluntary convention, not a replacement for established web standards or provider-specific crawler policies.
Can llms.txt override robots.txt?
No. Access controls and provider-specific crawler behavior remain separate.
Should every public page be listed?
No. Keep it focused on canonical, high-value resources and rely on the sitemap for comprehensive URL discovery.
