What this guide helps you decide
Understand the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO.
Which label covers which stage?
The three terms are easier to separate by the stage of the journey they measure than by definition. A buyer's path runs from crawl, to index, to retrieval, to citation, to mention, to recommendation, to visit, to conversion. SEO owns the first two and the classic ranking that follows. AEO and GEO describe the middle: whether a passage is retrieved, cited and used when an answer is generated. None of the three covers the end of the path, which is where revenue is decided.
- Crawl and index: SEO. Measured by coverage and crawl errors. Shared foundation for everything after it.
- Ranking in classic results: SEO. Measured by position, impressions and clicks.
- Direct answers and featured snippets: AEO. Measured by whether the page supplies the answer shown.
- Retrieval and citation in generated answers: GEO. Measured by how often an exact URL is cited over repeated runs.
- Mention and recommendation: GEO, and beyond it. Measured by how often the company is named as a fit.
- Visit and conversion: none of the three. Measured in analytics and the CRM.
How should a B2B team decide where to spend effort?
Find the first stage that is failing and work there. If important pages are not indexed, nothing downstream can work, and the task is technical SEO. If pages are indexed and rank but are never cited in generated answers, the passages probably do not answer the question directly, and the task is content structure. If the company is cited but a competitor is recommended, the gap is usually independent corroboration, which no on-page change fixes. If the company is recommended but visits do not convert, the problem is the website after the click. One team can own all of it; what matters is that each stage has its own measure and that a gain in one is not reported as a gain in another.
Where do the three overlap, and where does the evidence stop?
The overlap is large. Google states that the requirements for appearing in its AI features are the same as for Search, so most of what is sold as AEO or GEO is sound SEO: crawlable pages, clear text, accurate structured data and useful content. The real differences are in measurement, because generated answers vary between runs and must be reported as rates, and in the weight of third-party sources, which assistants use to decide who belongs in an answer. Beyond that, claims of a distinct GEO ranking formula are not supported by a primary source. For the stages in more detail see AI search for B2B, and for what to do about a measured gap see the AI search execution platform.
SEO earns retrieval
Search engines still need to crawl, index and understand the site. Pages need a clear purpose, useful information, internal links, descriptive titles and a good experience. Google states that its generative AI features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems, so traditional SEO is not optional.
AEO and GEO change what you inspect
Direct-answer and generative systems make the evidence more visible. Teams can inspect whether the brand was named, which competitor appeared, what sources were cited and how the company was described. This adds an answer-level measurement layer to the familiar ranking and traffic layer.
Do the work once, measure it several ways
Do not write separate near-duplicate pages for every label. Build one authoritative page for the buyer's intent. Make the answer clear, support claims, expose useful product facts and earn independent corroboration. Then measure rankings, AI answers, citations and qualified website activity separately.
- SEO: crawlability, indexation, relevance, authority and user value
- AEO: direct answers and extractable explanations
- GEO: generative mentions, citations and narrative accuracy
- Business layer: qualified visits, conversions and revenue evidence
Assign metrics without splitting the team
Keep one backlog of buyer decisions, pages and evidence, then attach channel-specific measurements. Traditional SEO can use crawl status, indexation, queries, rankings and organic conversions. AEO can observe whether a direct answer resolves the question and cites usable evidence. GEO can compare how generative systems mention a category, company and sources across repeated prompts. These labels describe different retrieval surfaces, not three separate content factories. One accurate comparison page may support all of them. Report the measurements separately so an increase in AI mentions is not presented as search traffic or revenue. The operating advantage comes from one accountable page owner and one evidence standard across every surface.
Multi-channel distribution plan for this buyer question
This guide is the canonical owned answer to: Do I need a separate GEO strategy?. Distribution should create independent, useful encounters with that decision rather than duplicate the page across many URLs.
| Surface | Job | Eli execution boundary |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT and Reddit | Learn from authentic comparisons and workflows | Research relevant threads, contribute only when a person can add real experience, disclose the Eli connection and keep the answer balanced |
| Google and Gemini | Keep the canonical answer crawlable, current and useful | Preserve this URL, named sources, internal links, structured data and a direct answer to the prompt |
| Perplexity and third-party sites | Earn independent corroboration | Give publishers testable evidence and editorial freedom instead of purchasing or scripting praise |
| YouTube | Create a prompt-led spoken answer and accurate transcript | Use the buyer question as the title, answer it immediately and say the tradeoffs aloud |
| Expose the framework to practitioners and collect objections | Publish a founder lesson, then use substantive feedback to improve this page | |
| Measurement | Detect channel impact and citation decay | Combine direct referrals with self-reported discovery and repeat comparable prompt checks at 30, 45 and 90 days |

Questions buyers ask next
Do I need a separate GEO strategy?
Usually not as a separate content factory. Add AI-answer monitoring, citation analysis and clear machine-readable facts to a strong people-first SEO program.
Does Google require special AI markup?
Google says no special markup or AI text file is required for its generative search features. Normal technical SEO and useful content remain the priority.
Which metric matters most?
Use the metric closest to the business decision. Track visibility and citations for diagnosis, then visits, qualified conversions and verified revenue separately.
