BUYER GUIDE · UPDATED 19 OCTOBER 2026
What is the best alternative to an SEO and AEO agency for a B2B company?
An agency sells people's time. The alternatives sell software, your own team's time, or a freelancer's. Which one fits depends on what you need done.
01 / WHAT AN AGENCY DOES
What does an SEO and AEO agency do?
Google's own guide to hiring an SEO lists what one can do: review your site's content or structure, give technical advice on website development, develop content, run online business campaigns, do keyword research and train your team.
An AEO agency adds the same work aimed at AI answers: checking which companies ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers name, and changing pages so they answer buyers' questions directly. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization beyond the same SEO basics, so much of the work is the same.
02 / THE OPTIONS
What are the alternatives?
Four ways to get the same work done, side by side. None of them is right for every company.
| Agency | Software that does the work | Tracker and your own team | Freelancer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | The agency's people. | The software; you approve changes. | Your team, guided by the tracker's reports. | One person, on the tasks you give them. |
| How you pay | A monthly retainer or a project fee. | A monthly plan. | A monthly plan plus your team's hours. | By the hour or the project. |
| What it needs from you | Briefings, reviews and meetings. | Site access and decisions on what it may publish. | Hours every week. | Clear tasks and review. |
| Strong at | Strategy, design, development, PR and outreach. | Daily checks and many small changes, done every week. | Control, when your team has the time. | One skill you lack, such as writing or development. |
| Weak at | Cost, and speed on small changes. | Work outside your own website, such as outreach and PR. | Work stops when the team is busy. | Strategy and continuity. |
03 / WHEN TO KEEP THE AGENCY
When is an agency the better choice?
When the work needs people and judgment that software does not have: a new positioning, a site redesign, a migration, digital PR and mentions on other sites, or outreach that someone has to send and answer. When you want one firm accountable in meetings. And when a good agency already gets results you can see, in demos or sales, not only in reports.
04 / WHEN SOFTWARE FITS
When is software the better choice?
When most of the work is checking the same buying questions every day and making many small changes on your own website. When the budget for a retainer is not there, or the agency's monthly report shows little done. And when you want to see and approve each change yourself.
Software does not replace outreach to other sites, design judgment or a strategy session. Many companies keep a freelancer or a small agency for those and let software do the weekly work.
05 / BEFORE YOU SIGN
What should you ask before you choose?
Google suggests asking any SEO for examples of previous work, whether they follow Google Search Essentials, and what results to expect in what time. Ask a software vendor the same, plus what it publishes without a person.
Google also warns that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. The same holds for AI answers: be careful with anyone, agency or software, who promises that ChatGPT will name you.
06 / WHERE ELI FITS
Where does Eli fit?
Eli makes this page and is software that does the work. Eli is an AI marketing team you hire. On the paid levels it learns the company, asks the buying questions in AI assistants every day, picks the next job and says why, does it, checks again after about a week and learns from what changed. It works on AI answers (ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers), on the website and on Meta ads inside the owner's budget.
The owner approves the first change. After that the owner can let Eli publish by itself. More money or anything new waits for a yes. Eli is used from ChatGPT or Claude, with a dashboard and a weekly report. It does not send outreach to other sites by itself. Plans: Launch €99 or $99, Grow €249 or $249 and Scale €599 or $599 a month, with a free plan to start.

About Eli · facts checked 18 October 2026
What Eli is
Eli is your AI marketing team. Its job: get you named in AI answers, improve your website so more visitors become customers, and run your Meta ads inside your budget. Eli is for founders of B2B software and service companies, often 11 to 50 people, whose website gets visitors but not enough customers, and who have no marketing team to work on it.
You use Eli from ChatGPT or Claude, through Eli's MCP connector, or in your Eli account at hireeli.io, and Eli sends you one short report a week. There is no new dashboard to learn.
Eli Free is free forever: one website, one full check, no card. The paid plan, Eli, has three levels a month: Launch €99 or $99, Grow €249 or $249 (recommended), Scale €599 or $599. Every level has every feature; only capacity differs. Enterprise is scoped and priced in a call. Your ad budget is separate and goes directly to Meta.
You approve Eli's first change and your ad budget. After that you can let Eli improve pages and publish by itself, and you can undo anything. More money or anything new still waits for your yes. "Stop everything" works at any time. Eli never promises a ranking, a revenue figure, a multiple or a date. It tracks conversions, reports what it measured, and says so when it is too early to tell.
